Banks' Loan Loss Reserves

BW online has a commentary about how banks adjust their loan-loss estimates to manage earnings.

Last year the banks had an easy way to juice their profits. All they had to do was allocate a little less money to loan-loss reserves -- the money they set aside to cover bad debt. As the economy has improved and defaults have slowed, many decided they didn't need as much in reserve as they did in 2003, and presto, their earnings per share would rise a few cents.

Do a little digging, and the current numbers don't look so great. Detroit's Comerica Inc. (CMA ) had one of the largest drops in its loan-loss reserves relative to total assets, according to a study of large banks' fourth-quarter earnings done by SNL for BusinessWeek. Not only did Comerica fail to add money in the fourth quarter, it also extracted $21 million from the pot. That gave it an extra $98 million in income, or 57 cents a share, that it didn't have last year. The bank beat analysts' earnings estimates by 10 cents. Comerica Chief Credit Officer Dale Greene says muted loan growth, coupled with major improvement in credit quality, justify the move.

The gene, and its protein product, in a serious inherited muscle disease was first identified in the case of Duchenne muscular dystrophy some twenty years ago. Dystrophin turned out to be a sarcolemmal protein. This was somewhat of a surprise because many had harboured the view up until then that most muscle diseases, if not all, might be due to defects in the sarcomere itself. Major 7.6 earthquake, tsunami hit Pacific's Vanuatu

A major 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu on Tuesday, shaking buildings and generating a small tsunami, but there were no immediate reports of injury or damage.

The undersea earthquake struck at a depth of 60 kilometres (37 miles) roughly 40 kilometres from the main island of Efate, which includes the capital Port Vila, Geoscience Australia said.

Local residents said the earth shook for about 15 seconds but the quake did not appear to have caused significant damage.

"It wasn't too much," a Port Vila hotel employee said, referring to the shaking. "Everything's fine."

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a 23-centimetre (9.2 inch) tsunami hit Port Vila, but warned bigger waves may be seen in other areas.

"Higher wave amplitudes may yet be observed along coasts near the earthquake epicentre," the centre said.

Vanuatu, which lies between Fiji and Australia and north of New Zealand, is in the "Pacific Ring of Fire" known for its seismic and volcanic activity caused by friction between moving plates in the Earth's crust.

In May, a 7.2 earthquake prompted a brief tsunami alert, and at least three earthquakes measuring 6.0 or stronger have hit the archipelago since the start of July.

The country was hit by three major quakes last October, while a giant plume of volcanic ash has disrupted domestic flights in neighbouring New Caledonia in recent months.

The US Geological Survey measured Tuesday's earthquake at 7.5 and said it was 35 kilometres deep, and just 40 kilometres from Port Vila.

Ten drown in Diamir flood torrent

At least ten people lost their lives by drowning in flood tide in Gilgit-Baltistan district of Diamir, Geo News reported Tuesday.

All eight districts of Gilgit-Baltistan are witnessing acute shortage of food and fuel in the wake of devastations unfolded by the flooding.

At least ten people of the same family including women and children were killed when their house could not withstand the flood pressure and collapsed in District Diamir area of Khanar Valley. Two of them have been rescued.

A drought-like situation appeared in various Gilgit-Baltistan areas including Gilgit, Skardu, Challas, Astore, Hunza and Gagoch, where flooding slapped massive devastations.The power and telecommunication system were badly disrupted in the entire area.

The flood wave raging out of Skardu severely damaged Karakoram Highway from Ponji to Diamir and to the Kohistan areas.Various villages of Skardu were inundated by the high tide in River Shagar and River Shiok as well as River Indus.The blockage of Karakoram Highway and Gilgit-Skardu Road has led to severe scarcity of food and petroleum products.

Govt blocks two TV stations amid massive flooding

The Committee to Protect Journalists calls for the Pakistani government to allow GEO TV and ARY News stations back on the air. The shutdown, coupled with demonstrations by government supporters outside the cable companies’ facilities Saturday night came soon after the stations aired news about a protester throwing shoes at Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari during a speech in England.

According to ARY News’ correspondent Jamal Khan Baluch: “On Saturday evening in Karachi, the staff of President Zardari called cable operators and ordered them to block ARY News transmissions all over Pakistan. When some cable operators refused to do so they started threatening and sent their armed people to different cable operators’ locations, where they started firing towards their offices and their staff.”

There were no serious injuries reported. Staffers at Geo News in Pakistan confirmed the story. Both networks’ news desks said the ban is still in effect. According to Pakistani media reports, the demonstrators outside of the cable companies’ facilities were supporters of Zardari’s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

The shoe-throwing incident occurred in Birmingham on Saturday night, as Zardari was speaking to a closed meeting of Pakistanis who live in England. The official Pakistani government news service issued a story stating the reports were not true, citing “the sensational and unverified reporting by media.”

The Associated Press reported from Birmingham that the unnamed heckler was apparently angered by the government’s poor response to widespread flooding in the country that has left hundreds of thousands of people homeless.

Soon after the Saturday incident, GEO’s website reported that some PPP leaders and government officials had warned cable operators across the country to cease transmission of GEO, but most refused to do so. As of this morning, “most of the cable companies in all the large cities have been forced to stop carrying ARY and Geo—it’s not just in Karachi,” Baluch told CPJ today.

“With Pakistan in the middle of the civil calamity brought about by massive flooding, the country needs its news media more than ever,” said Bob Dietz, CPJ’s Asia program coordinator.

“Shutting down two leading cable operators during a critical time in Pakistan is frankly a selfish attempt by the government to protect itself. The order to take GEO TV and ARY News is a monumental error, and should be rescinded immediately.”

The Associated Press of Pakistan reported today that 1,204 have died and 1,309 have been injured, with 4,772 villages and more than 3 million people affected by the flooding.

The United Nations put the number of affected considerably higher. The U.N. estimates that 6 million people have been affected by the floods, which have inundated villages, killing people and destroying homes, crops, the infrastructure, and other property. Continuing rainfall has been hampering the emergency humanitarian response.

Today, journalists demonstrated in front of Karachi Press Club, protested the shutdown of the stations, demanding they be allowed back on the air.
